Poor and Afflicted

AUTHOR:
Hurst, John N.

GOD HAS CHOSEN HIS CHILDREN in a furnace of affliction. They pass through “great tribulation” before reaching the heavenly Jerusalem, and I am glad that it is so; for if it was not, we would not be conformable to the sufferings of Christ. We must have fellowship with his sufferings, if we are partakers of his joys and his glory; and through suffering we are enabled the better to reflect the image of Christ in our practical walk. Paul says, We are troubled on every side; perplexed, persecuted, cast down, but not in despair, nor destroyed; “always bearing about the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body, and in our mortal flesh” (2 Cor. 4).

Then “be of good cheer.” “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations (trials), knowing that the trying of your faith worketh patience, if needs be ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations.” The trial of your faith is more precious than gold, though it be tried with fire. Then there is a needs be for it. We are thus better prepared to determine whether our faith stands in the wisdom of men or in the power of God. Being ofttimes delivered from these troubles, we feel some assurance that we have that faith that works by love, and that giveth us the victory over the world.
